# XGS-PON

> XGS-PON is the ITU-T G.9807.1 PON standard delivering about 10 Gbit/s symmetrical capacity while sharing the same fiber plant as GPON.

XGS-PON was published by the ITU-T in 2016 as Recommendation G.9807.1. It offers a 9.95 Gbit/s line rate in both directions. That symmetry gives it a clear advantage over GPON for upload-heavy business services, mobile backhaul and cloud applications. Its predecessor XG-PON (G.987) was asymmetric at 10/2.5 Gbit/s.

XGS-PON uses 1577 nm downstream and 1270 nm upstream. Because these do not overlap with GPON's 1490/1310 nm, both technologies can run on the same ODN. Combo PON ports integrate GPON and XGS-PON in a single optic on the OLT, so operators can move to 10G services without disturbing existing subscribers. Where needed, a wavelength-blocking filter is placed in front of legacy ONTs.

Optical budget classes are defined as N1 (29 dB), N2 (31 dB), E1 (33 dB) and E2 (35 dB). When adding XGS-PON to an existing GPON network, the budget calculation should account for two things: slightly higher fiber attenuation at 1270 nm than at 1310 nm, and the extra insertion loss of the WDM combiner built into combo optics.

Capacity is shared per port. An XGS-PON port split 1:32 makes 1 Gbit/s-and-above plans viable at scale. The next steps in the PON family are 25GS-PON and 50G-PON in the ITU-T G.9804 series, both designed to coexist with existing PON technologies on the same fiber plant.
