Greenhouse and livestock operations depend more and more on continuous monitoring of data such as temperature, humidity and energy. A temperature drop at night, a broken fan or a power cut nobody notices can put a season's work at risk within hours.

Most of these operations are far from urban infrastructure and spread over large areas. There is often no fiber, cellular coverage can be weak, and field sensors need long battery life. That means planning long-range wireless links together with low-power IoT technologies such as LoRaWAN and NB-IoT.

## Industry needs

- **Large areas far from infrastructure**: Greenhouses, barns and storage buildings can be far apart. Wireless links and antennas have to be planned around the terrain.
- **Monitoring climate and conditions**: When temperature, humidity and similar values are not tracked in real time, crop losses or animal health issues are noticed too late.
- **Energy costs and outages**: Heating, irrigation pumps, ventilation and cooling are big expenses. Tracking consumption and outages matters for both cost and continuity.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I choose LoRaWAN or NB-IoT for greenhouse sensors?

It usually comes down to the size of the area, coverage and the number of sensors. With LoRaWAN you set up your own gateway, cover a large area without relying on an operator and get long sensor battery life. NB-IoT runs on the mobile operator's network and needs no gateway, but you have to factor in local coverage and line costs.

### Is Metrik available now?

Not yet. Metrik is in development and coming soon. In the meantime, we suggest setting up your connectivity and choosing sensors and devices that use the protocols Metrik is planned to support: Modbus, MQTT, LoRaWAN, LoRa and NB-IoT.

### How do we bring internet to a farm far from town?

The common and economical route in rural areas is a wireless PTP link from the nearest fiber or operator connection point, with an intermediate relay if there is no line-of-sight. Where cellular coverage is good, an LTE router is another option. You can model the link route in WiMap (beta) beforehand and buy the equipment on wi.com.tr.

### Are rural wireless links affected by the weather?

It depends on the frequency: rain has a limited effect in the 5 GHz band and a significant one at higher frequencies such as 60 GHz. Line-of-sight, Fresnel zone clearance and antenna alignment matter more. Leave enough fade margin and allow for seasonal changes such as trees coming into leaf.
